Advantages of hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesives
Pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA, self-adhesive, self-stick adhesive) is a type of nonreactive adhesive which forms a bond when pressure is applied to bond the adhesive with a surface. Hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesives are adhesives on the basis of thermoplastic rubber.
These are characterised by the fact that they do not set completely, but remain permanently tacky. For this reason, the designation “ Pressure Sensitive Adhesive” was created for this group of adhesives.No solvent, water, or heat is needed to activate the adhesive. It is used in pressure-sensitive tapes, labels, glue dots, note pads, automobile trim, and a wide variety of other products.
The contact pressure has a major influence on the resulting adhesive strength, in order to achieve sufficient wetting between the hot-melt adhesive and the substrate. There is a very wide range of formulation options that can be used to adjust the final properties of hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesives. Such adjustable properties include surface tack, cohesion and adhesion etc.
