Hot Melt Glue for Wood

The good news is that it doesn't grip as persistently as some materials, which leaves you with several options for loosening its grip without damaging the finish of the table. The adhesiveness of hot melt glue is a desirable quality when using it to stick things together, but not when trying to remove it from a tabletop.

Cool or Heat the Glue

Hot melt glue, which is typically a combination of polyester and polystyrene resins, responds to both heat and cold. Put an ice cube in a plastic bag and set the bag on the glue deposit. After about two or three minutes, the glue should be brittle enough to tap with a block of wood and a hammer to break it into removable pieces.

As an alternative, To remove it from a finished tabletop using heat, cover it with an absorbent rag and set a hot iron on the rag for about 30 seconds. The glue should melt, and what doesn't soak into the rag can be wiped away.

Dissolve With a Solvent

Apply a small amount of acetone to the glue with a cotton swab, let it work for a short time, and then wipe with a cloth. You may have to repeat this several times to get all the glue. You can remove hot melt glue with acetone, but you must do this carefully, because acetone can potentially harm the wood's finish. Test the solvent on an inconspicuous part of the table first to avoid damaging it.
